In the midst of building a new home, this Canadian family decided to incorporate a home theater into the plan. AV Works Inc., of Sherwood Park, Alberta, was contracted to design the home theater layout and oversee installation of the home media system.

The goal was to create a comfortable, multi-functional space that could perform double duty, whether it was used to entertain guests or to provide the ultimate movie viewing experience. The custom home theater includes inviting aesthetics and décor in a design that features natural acoustics and quiet construction, plus a stand-up bar and open area that are perfect for socializing with guests.

Customer Wish-List

With its location on the home's lower level, the theater could easily seem dark and enclosed. The client wanted to ensure that the space was warm, open and aesthetically pleasing.

The Challenges

The room's lower level location presented two challenges for a home theater system:

  • Limited ceiling height
  • Numerous subsystems and structural members in the joist bays between floors, potentially adding sound interference

The Solutions

Ceiling Heights and Between-Floor Subsystems: To accommodate low ceilings and the presence of other subsystems between the floors, AV Works, Inc. created a soffit design with cross sections that quiet the HVAC and ventilation systems and provide space for the isolated projector housing. The design was carefully calculated for projector offset and throw distance as well.

Lighting System: The home theater lighting offers multiple zones that support various room-use scenarios - all while maintaining lighting control at the screen to preserve picture quality. The LED lights in the soffits, which are easily controlled from a touchscreen, are also capable of multiple color scenes.

Media Control System: The control system features an iPad interface in a motorized, in-wall docking station that allows users to control lights, sound and action from any seat in the house.

Acoustics: The custom home theater features an engineered acoustical environment, including decoupled construction for isolation and smooth bass. AV Works also ensured balanced sound at all listening positions by integrating acoustical materials into architectural wall upholstery. Best of all, it was done in a way that maintained the client's wish for a concealed, contemporary look.
