This Smartcomm project showcases a modern cinema room which provides a relaxing family space, for movies and gaming, as well as a stylish environment for entertaining friends.

Customer Wish-List

The brief demanded a state-of-the-art, eight-seat cinema containing stunning video and audio reproduction. The overall room styling was to be modern and minimalistic, with all equipment out of sight, but with an additional requirement to achieve something "exquisite and striking" which the owners would be proud to show their friends.

The Challenges

The room itself is fairly small, which presented initial challenges at the design stage. However, by working closely with the architect and interior designer, Smartcomm has ensured that the equipment is discreetly integrated without impacting on the cinematic experience.

The Solutions

For ease of use, Smartcomm designed the room to be part of a fully integrated Crestron control system.
The centrepiece of the cinema is the Screen Research 2:40:1 X-Mask 2™ curved cinema screen. The acoustically transparent 2.8 metre frame has been built with lateral masking, framing the screen with a cinematic black border that is flexible to a range of aspect ratios. Precision motors ensure impressive accuracy for masking positions which can all be controlled by the Crestron interface.

The screen is complemented by a Digital Projection M-Vision projector which delivers a pristine high-definition picture. Due to the limited dimensions of the room, and the existence of a lowered bulkhead ceiling, Smartcomm chose to install the projector so that it is encapsulated within the ceiling. When the projector is enabled, it lowers down at the back of the room and, using a motorised mirror system, displays the picture clearly. As well as maintaining a clean interior, it reduces noise and eliminates distractions. The projector is still accessible from the room, should maintenance be required.

Triad in-wall speakers provide exceptional surround sound, contributing to the home cinema experience, while their sleek unimposing style help sustain the sophistication of the décor. Likewise, in-ceiling speakers ensure the wall interiors are not compromised. With two rows of seats on different levels, a 9.2 speaker configuration was deemed as giving the optimum balanced sound across the room. As the screen is acoustically transparent, the front right, centre and left speakers are positioned behind and at the edges of the cinema screen, immersing the listener in a continuous even sound from the front stage.

The "futuristic" feel starts before the audience enters the room, as access is restricted by an ekey finger scanner. This compact device is equipped with a line sensor, so the user swipes their finger rather than pressing; eliminating the risk of misuse as fingerprints are not left.

Once in the room, the Crestron Intelligent Lighting system activates an array of spotlights and the ceiling is illuminated with dozens of alternating Starlight fibre optics; presenting a charming ambience.

The room is controlled through a Crestron handheld touch panel featuring a brilliant 2.8" colour screen. This wireless remote provides simple control of every aspect of the cinema from selecting a DVD from the Kaleidescape media server, to automatically adjusting the screen's aspect ratio.

Other Design Elements:

As décor is an integral part of the cinematic experience, Smartcomm chose luxurious material including leather and suede-like Alcantara for the acoustic panels that surround the room. The panels also conceal two entrance doors, maintaining a slick interior as well as sound-proofing the room so noise does not travel into the rest of the home. Dark and neutral colours help light absorption and handles have been omitted for minimalist styling. Hand-turned matt black handrails with glass infills complement the plush furnishings whilst providing a safety aspect to the steps.

For complete relaxation, eight electric reclining home theatre seats, with a premium leather finish, ensure comfort throughout the screening.

A modified space next to the cinema room provides a discreet home for the racks housing the AV equipment. The racks are pull-out, giving 360° access for maintenance, and fitted wooden double doors create a simple cupboard that matches the rest of the home.

The combination of stunning sound and image quality, imaginative lighting and sumptuous interiors create a truly impressive home cinema. The client is delighted with the system, which "exceeded his expectations", and "would have no hesitation in recommending Smartcomm to family and friends".
